Physical button simulator

Physical buttons are ubiquitous and offer rich haptic characteristics. Yet there has been little research attempting to expose their design for empirical and engineering research. Dr. Sunjun Kim and PhD student Yi-Chi Liao are developing a “universal button” that is able to simulate relevant haptic features, includign arbitrary (continuous) force-displacement curves throughout the travel range of a button. In this video, we demonstrate changing activation force. We seek to broaden understanding of optimal button design.
